Frank Foster
November 2, 1941-- February 3, 2001
Frank M. Foster, 59 -- A native of
Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Alton LeRoy
and Kathleen Patterson Foster.
He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist
Church Spartanburg and a former member of the Civitan Club.
He graduated from
Wofford
College, was a
retired investment banker and an Army veteran, having served as a captain
for five years.
In
1967 Frank joined the Amateur Trapshooting Association and started ATA
registered Trapshooting.
I do not know when Frank started shooting clay
targets. I have heard people say it was at a young age. Frank had a natural
ability with a shotgun and clay targets, which is why he was so good at the
sport. Over the years he became a champion in both Skeet and Trap.
In 1969 two years after he began
shooting ATA trap,
Frank Foster captured the South Carolina
Handicap Championship.
In his years of Trapshooting, Frank has captured
numerous Singles, Doubles and Handicap Championships in South Carolina and
other states.
Frank was the first South Carolina Trapshooter to be
inducted into the South Carolina Trapshooting Hall of Fame in 1996.
He has won four Grand American
trophies.
He earned runner-up laurels in the 1973 Clay Target
Championship and in 1974 the Zone Champion of Champions Crown.
Frank was named to the ATA All – American
Trapshooting Teams in 1973, 74 and 75.
In the Southern Trapshooting Division he won two singles
and three all-around championships between 1971 and 1977.
Frank has served as President of the
South Carolina Trapshooters’ Association.
In 1996 he was elected to the position of ATA
Delegate for South Carolina, a position he held until his death.
In 2000 Frank was elected into the
South Carolina Skeet Shooters Hall of Fame.
Frank is the only person to be inducted into
both the South Carolina Trapshooters’ Hall of Fame and the Skeet Shooters
Hall of Fame.
Frank was also Manager of the Spartanburg Gun
Club.
Frank
Foster will be truly missed by all.
